There is an unavoidable issue in blockchain networks: State Bloat. This refers to the problem of the size of the blockchain distributed ledger increasing over time, which burdens future nodes. Blockchain projects typically propose technical solutions to address this, but the Sui Network offers an incentive-based solution called a “Storage Fund.”
Despite being a distributed database, it is impractical for blockchains to store blobs such as images and videos. Therefore, the introduction of decentralized storage solutions is essential. For this reason, Mysten Labs is launching Walrus.
The first strength of Walrus compared to other storage protocols is Red Stuff encoding. This method allows for very fast reading/writing of data and recovery in the event of data loss, compared to methods used by Filecoin, Arweave, Storj, and Sia.
The second strength is that Walrus's data is programmable. Walrus utilizes the Sui Network to manage the lifecycle of storage nodes, the lifecycle of blobs, and various tasks related to data utilization.
The third strength is that Walrus has potential beyond simple data storage. Walrus not only securely stores data but also allows for sensitive data to be processed in compliance with privacy through SEAL and Nautilus, providing a foundation for ecosystem participants to freely utilize and monetize data.
Thanks to these advantages, Walrus has been able to build various use cases and ecosystems. Walrus Sites are the most representative use case, allowing for the construction of decentralized frontends by deploying websites not on centralized hosting servers like AWS, but on the Sui Network and Walrus.
Walrus is not limited to the Sui ecosystem; anyone can utilize Walrus as a storage solution in ecosystems beyond Sui. In the newly defined internet by Mysten Labs, Walrus is expected to play a key role as a storage solution.
